St. Onge Company’s Howard Turner recently gave a presentation at Automating the Warehouse 2024. In his presentation, “MMH VS Software: WMS and the future of AI in warehouse/DC management”, Howard talks about the rise of software solutions that make existing WMS solutions even better and new capabilities that give WMS processes a boost. Warehouse management systems (WMS) remain the transactional and process management foundation for inventory control and order fulfillment in most warehouses/DCs—we call it the “hub” of the modern operation. In recent years, when Modern has surveyed readers about WMS use close to 80% have told us they use some type of WMS.
Advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are also adding to the modern WMS capability mix. As our speaker points out, of high interest are AI tools that exist in the decision-making space. These decision engines work by integrating with existing multiple supply chain management software—enterprise resource planning, WMS, warehouse execution systems, order management, demand planning—to consume data, identify pain points, provide predictive analytics and recommend decisions to optimize operations.
