Modern Materials Handling recently published an article in their April issue discussing how modern warehouses must be designed around the human experience—not just efficiency—to improve retention in a tight labor market. They talked with our very own Norm Saenz, and he emphasized that as facilities become more automated, the demands on both buildings and workers increase, making safety, visibility, and comfort essential. He highlighted how investments in lighting, temperature control, and ergonomics directly affect productivity and morale, often in ways workers immediately recognize. Norm underscored that thoughtful environmental improvements signal to employees that companies value their well-being, not just output.

Norm Saenz, partner at St. Onge Company, says operators today are trying to support both people and automation inside the same facilities. “The fulfillment environment is pretty complex right now,” Saenz explains. “Companies want workers to feel safe and productive, but they’re also adding more automation into their buildings. That puts more demands on the facility and the people working in it.”
