St. Onge Company’s Howard Turner was quoted in a recent Modern Materials Handling article about software automation. He explains that while warehouse software vendors are expanding capabilities and blurring the lines between WMS, WES, and WCS, these systems still serve distinct roles and the long-promised vision of a single, equipment-agnostic execution platform has yet to become reality. He talks about how the rise of WES created excitement but also confusion, as many traditional WCS solutions were rebranded without adding the broader orchestration capabilities originally envisioned.
“If a company says, ‘This mini-load system works well for us, this automated storage system works well over here, and these AMRs really fit the operation, and I want to use those three and have a system that ties it all together,’” Turner says, “you really can’t do that today.”
